LITERATURE REVIEW 2.1 The History and Evolution of Construction and Project Management When it comes to organisational and management theory, a wide range of information exists. However, a short history could start with the work of Taylor (1911) and Fayol (1949) (cited by Walker, 2007); they both described a classical organisational concept based on scientific management. This theory derived from a hard-systems model and treated individuals as machines in order to maximise their efficiency. A radically different approach to this mechanistic organisational doctrine came quickly. This was the behavioural management approach, which was generated in the 1930s. Within this model, the human became the centre of organisations, and analysis was conducted with a focus on the way the personal aspirations interact with the organisational goals. The first model was the ancestor of the Cost-Time-Quality managerial approach, while the second model placed a focus on the personal interactions between organisations. Subsequently, in the 1950s, the socio-technical approach was developed; this method emphasised the ââ¬Å"joint optimisationâ⬠, the integration of both human and organisational goals.
